83383-richard-aldrich-monograph
Richard Aldrich: Monograph
The American artist Richard Aldrich is known for working within an expanded definition of painting. His works alternate between a wealth of visual information and an almost restrained materiality. His visual language thus ranges from richly nuanced abstractions in oil and wax to a primed canvas on which nothing more is visible than a sentence by the British psychiatrist Henry Maudsley from 1918. This variety of pictorial inventions is accompanied by radical interventions in the materiality of painting itself. Aldrich's exhibitions appear as constellations of interwoven yet heterogeneous parts that reflect each other and open up different levels of understanding. In a broader sense, he is always concerned with the question of how intelligence is attributed to objects in the act of interpretation.

With new essays, this monograph offers the most comprehensive overview to date of Aldrich's oeuvre and at the same time opens up new art-historical perspectives on an artist who is today one of the most important painters of his generation.

Richard Aldrich was born in Hampton, Virginia, in 1975.
