84129-viewing-positions
Viewing • Positions
A panel painting was created for presentation purposes, which prevents its other side from being seen. An object that is not meant to be seen from all sides makes its own object status questionable. In modernism, artists began to recognize in this a problem of art's self-definition and its historical and cultural placement. They felt compelled to create situations that would benefit an understanding of this problem. This led to a thematic expansion of artistic awareness of problems, in the course of which the institutional frameworks of art as well as the cultural and political self-understanding of its recipients could be addressed. This book presents this historical process in selected stages of its developmental dynamics.

Gregor Stemmrich studied art, philosophy, and art history.
