HATJE CANTZ OPEN

Our strength is the distribution of high-quality, carefully curated books in the fields of art, architecture, photography, design and visual culture. With us, your printed work will reach a diverse and global audience. An additional open access publication offers an even more effective dissemination, as books published in open access are permanently and freely available to anyone with Internet access.

OUR MISSION IS THE WIDEST POSSIBLE DISSEMINATION OF YOUR CONTENT

We were one of the first art book publishers to acknowledge the substantial benefits of open access publications. Accordingly, we offer the opportunity to make a digital version of your book freely accessible online under the "Gold" or "Green" model. This enables the free eBook version to be published either concurrently with the print edition (Gold-OA) or after a predetermined embargo period (Green-OA).

We support all our electronic publications with detailed metadata and industry-standard classifications such as BISAC and ISBN. Thanks to our powerful distribution network, your open access book will be easily discovered via online platforms and search engines. This gives your publication a long-lasting presence and discoverability, even beyond the period of availability of the print edition.

PUBLISHING WITH A CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSE

All Hatje Cantz open access publications are released under one of the Creative Commons licenses. This allows you as the author to determine the extent to which your work is made available for use. Select the exact license type that matches your preferences for permitted further use. Six different license options are available to you, ensuring full control over your works. We are happy to assist you in choosing the right license. For more information about the licenses: Creative Commons - What is CC? The Creative Commons license does not apply to copyrighted third-party material. This allows images from other sources to be equipped with an “all rights reserved” (copyright) reference.

QUALITY CONTROL | PEER REVIEW

Hatje Cantz Verlag aims to guarantee high-quality content with every publication. The editorial and proofreading team, consisting of experts in art, photography, design, architecture and literature, play an important role in ensuring the quality of the content and accompany authors, artists and curators through the entire publication process. Once a manuscript or project proposal has been submitted, it is reviewed by the editorial team and the programme managers, focusing on clarity, factual accuracy and thematic stringency. The editorial team decides whether a manuscript is suitable for publication or still requires adjustments. The content is finalised in various editorial rounds to ensure that the best possible version of a book reaches its target audience. Each publication undergoes an intensive review process to ensure that its content is factually correct and relevant. Hatje Cantz focuses on publishing books that offer in-depth insights into art, culture and design and are thought-provoking. For academic publications, we work with external peer reviewers on request.

COSTS OF AN OPEN ACCESS PUBLICATION

The costs for an open access publication vary depending on the scope of the project and the specific publishing services. Usually, production and publishing costs are added together to calculate the publication fee and then offset against the expected income from the sale of the printed and electronic editions. In the open access model, there is an inequality of coverage, as there is no income from the electronic edition and additional open access services are incurred. This inequality is compensated by an open access fee (Book Processing Charge, BPC). Many institutions and funding organizations offer financial support for open access publications. Authors can submit funding applications to universities, research institutions or foundations.
