The works of Isa Genzken do not comprise a homogeneous formal canon. Her series of works since 1976 may employ the most divergent materials and structural phenomena, but they deal consistently with a specific thematic field in which her interest in architecture, the interfaces between inner and outer, the fragmentaryand the fragile, and the question of surface and stereometric structures find expression over decades. Genzken's method of work clearly shows an affinity with the related artistic areas of architecture and design. With an extraordinary eye she goes back to her built environment and devises sculptures that have the feel of architecture. In this however, her spatial concepts are not a transposition, but an engagement on a high level of artifice with sculptural problems. The publication shows Isa Genzken's most recent works, her columns, which make use of qualities present in modern architecture: as building-like sculptures they bring the exterior into the interior. According to Anke Kemkes, Genzken synthesizes "things that historically, in the original, could flourish side by side in the concepts of the avant-garde: minimal and Pop" (die tageszeitung).
