Herbert Brandl is one of the most important exponents of "New Painting", a direction in art which developed in the eighties not least as an answer to a Concept Art that had become academic. The Austrian artist has taken part in internationally renowned exhibitions since the middle of the eighties, among them documenta IX at Kassel in 1992. Unfortunately, his work has so far been largely unknown to a broader public. In this book, a selection of works documents Brandl´s artistic development to date. "Herbert Brandl´s painting may refer back to its origin - the landscape - but it is just as much a kind of painting with a definite meta-language... Despite the high degree of emotionality and subjectivity, there is a strongly analytical component.
