At the beginning of the 20th century, an international avant-garde of artists developed abstract photography, the origins and multifaceted evolution of which are traced in this handbook up to the present day.

Between 1916 and 1923 photographers like Man Ray, László Moholy- Nagy, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand abandoned carefully arranged still lifes for photograms - thereby 'inventing' abstract photography.
