Throughout his creative life Paul Klee took scissors to his own works, cutting them into two or more parts which he either left unchanged or reworked further. From over a hundred finished compositions he created roughly three hundred works. The principle of division can be traced through all the genres, whether Klee worked in lead pencil, India ink, or pen, in oil, tempera, watercolor, or glue-based paint. The art historians Wolfgang Kersten and Osamu Okuda have succceeded in the sometimes extremely difficult identification of the separate parts. They discuss the formerly unified and now independent compositions »beneath the sign of division«. The present volume contains a specially compiled documentation, in which the divided parts are shown both individually and in reconstructed versions. Through this synthesis of rarely seen or wholly unknown works by Klee, the characteristic elements of his avant-garde art production come clearly into focus.
