Birgit Hahn-Woernle´s monograph is the first comprehensive publication on the artist´s work who is regarded as the most important still life painter of the 17th century. The book offers today´s most complete presentation of his whole work and shows all known works on full-page colour-plates.
Together with Georg Flegel, Sebastian Stoskopff (1597-1657) is considered one of the most important German still-life painters of the 17th century. His apprenticeship in Hanau, the stay in Paris, Italy and Strasbourg are thoroughly treated in Birgit Hahn- Woernle's monograph, the first extensive study of the artist's work. In stylistic investigations, Stoskopff's artistic sources and his influence on contemporary painting are ascertained; the hidden symbolism of his still-lives indicate an iconographic analysis. Stoskopff's artistic production is accessible in a critical catalogue of the oeuvre which provides the most complete presentation of the total work to date and presents all the well- known works in full-page color panels.
