"Best-Designed Swiss Book Prize," 2003
Daniele Buetti is one of the most important artists in recent years to explore the topic of lifestyle and media codes. The artist, born in 1955 in Switzerland, has become known to a wider audience through his working-over of fashion advertisements, the re-formulation of beauty embodied by supermodels such as Claudia and Naomi, Giselle and Kate: he brutally scrawled "Never enough of you" onto the models' bodies, bringing the phantasmatic effect of mass communications precisely to a point. In other works the models are branded with Nike logos-the trademarks of the products they advertise-which become tumor-like growths on their skin. Due to such forceful subjects, Buetti has been called the "new king of pop"-a designation much too shallow in the light of Buetti´s extensive oeuvre of the last ten years, in which he explores the topic of our product- and consumer-crazy society in a much larger context. This publication for the first time reveals the performative beginnings and provides an overview of the most important installations, illuminated boxes, and videos. It also traces the origins of the "winged cross", Buetti´s trademark from the late eighties.
