Isaac Julien (*1960 in London), nominated in 2001 for one of the most respected art prizes in Great Britain, the Turner Prize, is a British artist involved in both cinema and the art scene. Since the 1990s his films, videos, and photographs have been shown in exhibitions around the world, including Documenta11. Recently, his work was seen in a solo exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.At the core of his artistic activity is his examination of themes connected to diaspora culture and black identity. His works always concentrate upon hidden patterns and traditions of culturalization and the creolization of space, and they constantly involve levels of real history. By contrasting different regions of the Earth, Julien reflects the influence and meaning of geographical location with regard to both culture and physical space.This publication presents two of Julien’s audio-visual installations, True North (2004) and Fantôme Afrique (2005), as well as a series of large-format photographs related to the videos. Exhibition schedule: kestnergesellschaft, Hanover, June 23–August 20, 2006
