Herbert Brandl (*1959), who has gained an international reputation for his solo shows in large institutions and his participation in important group exhibitions such as documenta IX in Kassel, was chosen to represent Austria at the 52nd Venice Biennale. For over twenty years, Brandl has produced paintings of international caliber, with a special focus on the possibilities of working with color. He is one of the few painters today to make important contributions to contemporary figurative and abstract painting alike. This publication documents Brandl’s work for the Austrian pavilion, and contains instructive texts by both Philipp Kaiser and by this year’s Biennale commissioner, Robert Fleck, alongside images of all his exhibited paintings. The book also contains a survey of Brandl’s latest works from 2005 to 2007. Exhibition schedule: Venice Biennial, Austrian Pavilion, June 10–November 21, 2007
»In light of the widespread rediscovery of painting today . . . this introduction to an outstanding contemporary painter within the special framework of the Venice Biennial is long overdue.«
Robert Fleck
