“Color is a great theme in our work: it’s something like building material for us.” Matthias Sauerbruch
The new building for the Udo and Anette Brandhorst Collection inMunich’s museum complex—one of the highlights of recent contemporary architecture—will be dedicated in spring 2009. More than seven hundred works of modern and contemporary art are being entrusted to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. This impressive museum, designed by internationally renowned Berlin-based architects Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton, is located on an extremely narrow plot of land very close to the Pinakothek der Moderne. Thirty-six thousand glazed ceramic bars in twenty-three different colors lend the building an inimitable appearance, an urbane image of enormous concision, and an incomparable signal effect. The structure’s interior is reserved, giving prominence to the collection, yet its well-proportioned spaces are striking. With its technical innovations in lighting and ecologically sound climate control, the building sets new international standards for museum architecture. (English edition ISBN 978-3-7757-2355-8)
