| The first detailed survey of the artist’s prints
With his metaphysical, meditative works, Julius Bissier (1893-1965) belongs in between the abstract art of the early 20th century and the expressive phase of informal post-war art. His search for the artistic means that would make it possible for him to express the sacred and metaphysical profundity in his works led him from ink drawings to prints from the 1940s to the 1950s. His wood- and linocuts, wood engravings, frottages, and monotypes document his intense work with this medium, demonstrating that they occupy a key position in Bissier’s oeuvre. This is the first publication to focus on the woodcuts, contrasting them with the ink drawings and colorful monotypes. This allows for clarification and analysis of the close associations among the various modes of expression in Bissier’s work. Exhibition schedule: Städtisches Kunstmuseum Spendhaus, Reutlingen, April 20–June 30, 2013
