The extensive collection of notes, drawings, illustrations, and documents was left untouched in a Moscow studio for thirteen years after Kabakov left his homeland for New York, and was not recovered until 1997.
For a long time, it rested untouched in the Moscow studio of Ilya Kabakov - the Arriving Archive: It was May 1997 - thirteen years after the Russian artist had left Moscow - before his extensive collection of notes, documents, drawings, illustrations and objects finally made its way to his new home New York via airplane. "For some reason or other", writes Ilya Kabakov in this new volume in the Cantz Series, "I have decided to paste all these papers onto green sheets and turn them into an exhibition. (...) Which principles were used when the papers were pasted onto green sheets? (...) Do there need to be explanatory subtitles on the green sheets or can they be dispensed with? And, finally, which genre does such an exhibition belong to?" The small, elegant publication is a documentation of the exhibition project, giving insights into a strange, poetic world: a window into Ilya Kabakov´s workshop and past.
