In April 1919 Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar. Until 1925, the year it moved to Dessau, this was the meeting-place for the very wide spectrum of often contradicory ideas, utopias and experiments that formed the basis of the institution's renown. With more than 400 illustrations, this book shows the achivements of the Weimar Bauhaus - the first time they have been given such extensive coverage in a publication. The main focus is on the outstanding works by students from all workshops, from the studies in the famous introducory cours given by Johannes Itten to the design sketches that have become classics today. Another section is dedicated to Weimar's important Bauhaus collections, especially the world's only authorised collection on the Weimar Bauhaus at the Kunstsammlungen zu Weimar, which contains more than 8000 exhibits. Finally, the original "Bauhaus locations" in Weimar are brought to life, such as Henry van de Veldes art school buildings and Walter Gropius's memorial to those who died in the Revolution of 1848. Thanks to the great wealth of material, some of which is published for the first time in this book, what emerges is a colorfull, pluralistic world that profoundly contradicts the cliché of one single Bauhaus.
