Ingo Günther's works operate on a knife-edge between art and journalism, art and politics. They analyse and react to crisis situations, rendering these both visible and transparent, they intervene in the issues of the day. Interviews and researches in numerous refugee camps across the world formed the basis of his work Refugee Republic in which the artist proposes a supra- national and supra-territorial model state, a virtual republic, where the world-wide population of refugees represents and governs itself. In addition to World Processor - a continually expanding installation that started in 1989 and consists of over 100 lit-up globes illuminating problem spots worldwide - when the Gulf War broke out in 1990 Günther started a series of flags that soberly yet suggestively reflects political structures. REPUBLIK.COM, with essays by leading authors, is the first documentation of the three main areas of work that Ingo Günther - winner of the Stankowski Stiftung Prize in 1997 - has been pursuing since the late eighties. The artist: Ingo Günther, born 1957. Studied ethnology and cultural anthropology in Frankfurt. From 1978 studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf with Fritz Schwegler and Günther Uecker. From 1983 a master pupil with Nam June Paik. Numerous exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1984, documenta VIII in 1987. 1997 winner of the ZKM/Siemens Media Art Prize. Lives mainly in New York.
Alois Mosbacher (*1954 in Strallegg, Austria), a representative of the Neue Malerei, or New Painting, movement of the eighties, works primarily as a painter and is committed to the tradition of expressive representationalism. In terms of form, this is articulated in an intriguing relationship between painting and graphic art. Mosbacher’s recent pictures make more use of photography and mass media than did his paintings from the eighties, which involved a personal mythology. The artist has also always worked with sculpture and installations. At the core of his considerations is the human being in relationship to the space he inhabits, nature, of which he is a part.
This publication presents both the highlights of Mosbacher’s long career, assembled from international collections, as well as his new works, which include both installations and performative pieces.

Swiss artist François Berthoud (*1961) is one of today’s most outstanding fashion illustrators. He began his work in the fashion capital of Milan in 1982, and quickly developed his inimitable signature illustrations of clothes, shoes, handbags, perfumes, and accessories. Berthoud gained worldwide prominence through his work for magazines such as Vanity and Vogue. His expressive, highly aesthetic linocuts, drip paintings, and computer graphics accompany countless fashion advertising campaigns—from Yves Saint Laurent, Bulgari, Calzedonia, and Ferragamo to Viktor & Rolf and Sonia Rykiel. Here, the object being depicted and Berthoud’s visual interpretation combine to form a Gesamtkunstwerk that essentially influences the perception and successful marketing of the product.
This generous publication was developed in collaboration with François Berthoud himself. It presents originals, sketches, as well as work samples, allowing the reader to appreciate the entire work process.
Exhibition schedule: Museum für Gestaltung, Zurich, June 22–October 9, 2011
