The Master of Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden

Robert Campin, known as the Master of Flémalle (c. 1375–1444), and his pupil Rogier van der Weyden (c. 1399–1464) were of crucial importance to the early development of Old Netherlandish painting. Along with Jan and Hubert van Eyck, they explored the visible world through painting, and thanks to oil—a new medium at the time—they were able to depict the details of this world with a realism that had never been seen before: precious brocades, the tears on the cheeks of a grieving Madonna, or snow-covered Alpine peaks on the distant horizon.
The Netherlandish painters of the sixteenth century took previously unfamiliar motifs and made them worthy of painting. Still, these types of mundane details continued to make reference to a transcendental reality, since the age was still deeply influenced by religious concepts. In this monograph, more than fifty masterpieces by teachers and students, on loan from the most important museums in the world, have been assembled side by side, allowing a direct comparison and classification of this hotly debated body of works.

    Stephan von Huene

Stephan von Huene (1932–2000) gained international acclaim primarily with his sound sculptures. From these beginnings in the sixties, however, he developed a rich, multilayered body of drawings until well into the late nineties. This publication provides a detailed examination of the artist’s sketches, autonomous drawings, prints, collages, and mind maps, and interprets the various functions and contexts of the works on paper. It explains the influences of European and North American art and culture on von Huene’s work, and demonstrates how essential his works on paper were for the conception and design of his sound sculptures. The texts assembled here reflect the lines of thought and working methods of an artist who, as far as his work was concerned, was also a scientist.

    Le Corbusier

A classic work - out of print for many years - is now available once again: Mein Werk - a comprehensive yet very personal view of the architecture of Le Corbusier, written and compiled by the architect himself. Virtually unparalleled, Le Corbusier's revolutionary impact on twentieth-century architecture is reflected in early buildings such as the Weißenhofsiedlung, in major residential and business architecture, including his various Unités d'Habitation, in urban development projects for the cities of Algiers, Rio de Janeiro, Berlin and Chandigarh, and in such theoretical works as the development of Modulon. We are now offering our rare, long out-of-print classic, Le Corbusier - Mein Werk, originally published in co-operation with publisher Gerd Hatje in 1960, as a reprint of the first edition. With numerous photographs, plans, sketches and documents, the book describes and illustrates the development of Le Corbusier's architectural oeuvre as well as his painting and sculpture. Le Corbusier wrote the text, selected the photographs and even designed the typography himself. The product is a document of our age - the comprehensive statement of a great architect who designed and promoted architecture for the age of technology: houses as living machines, cities as rigorously rationalized work, traffic and residential complexes. The architect: Le Corbusier, born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (La Chaux-de- Fonds, Switzerland 1887-1965 Roquebrune). Trained as an engraver, painter and goldsmith at the École d'Art in La-Chaux-de-Fonds. Worked with Peter Behrens in his studio in 1910/11. His collection of writings on architecture was published in 1923 under the title " Vers une Architecture". His essay "Fünf Punkte zu einer neuen Architektur" appeared in 1927.

    Goran Djurovic

Serbian artist Goran Djurovic (*1952 in Belgrade), who currently lives and works in Berlin, studied painting in Dresden. Through the delicate tones of his palette as well as his formal succinctness, Djurovic’s painting—seemingly exhausting itself in narrative—actually presents a disturbing dream world in which the cryptic truths of our lives are revealed. His work evokes the pain and embarrassment caused by the presumptuousness of our life schemes. Paradoxical reversals, ironic caesuras, and the blending of dissimilar realities create a visual philosophy of comical failure. Schooled in melancholy and the sarcastic terseness of Venetian art, each painting questions anew the authenticity of human life in relation to its internal and external natures.

    Katarzyna Kozyra

Katarzyna Kozyra captured the attention of the art world with the video of her intrusion into an all-male bathhouse, earning her honorable mention at the Venice Biennale in 1999. Since 2003 she has been working on In Art Dreams Come True, which consists of a series of performances, quasi-theatrical productions, and films. In creating the individual works, Kozyra has acted as director, chief performer, and as “raw material” in the hands of two master guides who assist her in assuming various roles. Gloria Viagra, the Berlin-based drag queen whom the artist sees as a model of “true femininity,” and the voice coach Grzegorz Pitulej, known as the Maestro, introduce Kozyra into worlds saturated with artificiality, convention, and posing. These features are central to each of Kozyra’s artistic characters, which include an opera diva, a drag queen, a cheerleader, Olympia from Offenbach’s opera, and Snow White.
