OTTI BERGER (1898 – 1944) was one of the most important textile designers of the 20th century. Born in Zmajevac, in what was then the Hungarian Kingdom of Croatia, she studied from 1921 – 1926 in Zagreb, and from 1927 at the Bauhaus in Dessau. After teaching at the Bauhaus, she became self-employed in Berlin in 1932 and designed fabric collections for modern interiors throughout Europe. In 1936, as a Jew, she was banned from her profession; attempts to flee to England and the USA failed. In 1944, she was deported from Croatia to Auschwitz and murdered there.
The visual artist and art historian JUDITH RAUM (*1977), as a result of several research projects on the Bauhaus weaving workshop, is a specialist in Otti Berger's work. This book concludes her multi-year cooperative project with the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, for which she has for the first time comprehensively researched Berger's estate, which is scattered across archives worldwide.

Nikola Doll (*1970) is an art historian and curator.
American photographer Nicholas Nixon is known for his large-format black-and-white photographs, in which he creates a special connection with the viewers by sharing intimate moments in life. For his most iconic series, The Brown Sisters, he followed four sisters over 46 years. His practice, however, encompasses a much broader spectrum, such as the simple life in the southern states of the US or landscape portraits of the rough industrial areas around Detroit. Beginning with the aspect of intimacy, this monograph provides the first overview of Nixon’s oeuvre. It is a journey through the artist’s life and work – at once distant and at times intimate and close – and also features new, previously unpublished photographs.
NICHOLAS NIXON (*1947) works with portrait and documentary photography. He studied art at the University of Michigan and the University of New Mexico. He had his first solo exhibition in 1976 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
With an outstanding selection of works spanning four decades, this volume offers for the first time a comprehensive look at O'Keeffe's works on paper—from the organic abstractions, nude drawings, and nature cycles of her early creative phase to the flowers, portraits, and aerial views of the following decades. In their texts, Samantha Friedman and Laura Neufeld show how working on paper shaped the oeuvre of the great artist and explain her outstanding position within American modernism.
GEORGIA O'KEEFFE (1887–1986) is one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. Raised on a farm in Wisconsin, her paintings gained great attention in New York from the 1920s onwards. From 1929, the stark landscape of New Mexico became a source of inspiration for her work.

This comprehensive monograph published in collaboration with Dirimart gathers works of contemporary artist Sarkis—conceived and presented in the context of the one city he keeps returning to: Istanbul. His iconic installation Çaylak Sokak, first exhibited in 1986, is considered a turning point in the history of contemporary art in Turkey. Named after the street Sarkis grew up in, Çaylak Sokak recreates his family home featuring a bathtub and his father’s shoes bearing the German words for war spoils KRIEGS and SCHATZ. A reference to German cultural theorist Aby Warburg’s concept of a “Leidschatz” as “humanity’s treasure of suffering”, “Kriegsschatz” became a key concept in Sarkis’ oeuvre. Drawing on his own Turkish-Armenian identity, Sarkis’s continunes his works presented at the Venice Biennale in 2015, the centennial of the Armenian genocide: his latest body of work Red Stained Glass traces the present through fragments from the past. Photographs from Istanbul are rendered in red, fractured, and recombined to further explore themes such as time and memory, presence and absence, identity and exile.
Paris-based Sarkis Zabunyan (*1938, Istanbul) is known by his first name SARKIS. He had his breakthrough with the exhibition Live In Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form at Kunsthalle Bern in 1969, was followed by his participation in documenta 6 and 7. Major exhibitions include Passages at the Centre Pompidou in 2010, Hôtel Sarkis, a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Geneva (MAMCO) in 2011, and his installation Respiro in the Turkish pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.
When, in the early eighties, minimalist and conceptual approaches were dominant in art, the consistently figural and emphatically sculptural representations of everyday subjects by Katharina Fritsch (* 1960), Jeff Koons (* 1955) und Charles Ray (* 1953) attracted a great deal of attention. Their striking stances continue to have an influence on cultural visual memory. Sculpture After Sculpture: Fritsch, Koons, Ray traces the parallel developments in the creative work of the three sculptors. Beginning with key works from the late eighties and early nineties that throw light on their shared interest in the consumer world and the ready-made, the publication delineates their artistic practice up to the present day. A direct comparison highlights the surprising similarities and marked differences in their oeuvres, and reveals the artists’ compelling reasons for a decidedly contemporary art of sculpture.

Since the late 1980s, Renée Green’s practice has imagined and expanded the ways in which art can give form to underwritten histories, collective memory, and circuits of cultural exchange. Her writing, installations, films, digital media, and sound works continue to trace and interrogate the power of cultural institutions and their relationships with language, knowledge, and constitutions of selfhood, while at the same time indicating other ways of being and becoming.
This artist’s catalogue extensively illustrates Green’s previously undocumented early work alongside recent installations, personal ephemera and excerpts from fiction selected by the artist. Essays by a new constellation of writers relate Green’s work to legacies of migration and displacement, language and access, as well as alternative approaches to reading and being read.

Raoul Hausmann (1886–1971) was one of the most innovative avant-gardists. He was one of the inventors of collage, explored body, language, and space in early happenings, connected the visual with the haptic, and translated sounds into images. The "Dadasoph" provocatively always turned against the established, even beyond art.

The new artist’s book by Paul McCarthy (* 1945 in Salt Lake City) presents one of the artist's most significant works: The Box (1999). The work is a displaced sculpture of McCarthy’s entire studio. Inconspicuous from the outside, a fabricated wooden structure like a shipping crate with four holes indicating the windows and doors in McCarthy's actual studio, the inside reveals an overwhelming diversity of objects thereby creating an intimate portrait of the artist’s mindscape. The contents of The Box are the actual items from McCarthy's studio in Los Angeles, California, containing approximately three thousand objects, from a steel cabinet to a pencil, drawings and artworks. Only one thing is amiss, the box is tipped ninety degrees on its side, its contents, fixed to their surfaces, appear to defy gravity and taunt the viewer's perception of right-side-up. This radical displacement is repeated in the design of the catalog, thereby creating an object that functions as yet another haptic inversion. The aesthetic of disorientation is reflected in the volume, which was developed in close consultation with the artist.

The diverse work of Belgian artist Fabrice Samyn often references masterpieces of art history. His compositions, installations, and performances explore grand metaphysical questions, combining conceptual rigor with spiritual sensuality. Against the backdrop of his art-historical references, Samyn was invited by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels to enter into a subtle dialogue with the masterpieces of the Old Masters as well as the Musée Magritte. With his fascination for the spoken word and everyday poetry, Samyn is in a tradition with fellow Belgian artist René Magritte, and he is equally successful in translating details from the paintings of the Old Masters into a contemporary visual language.
FABRICE SAMYN (*1981) is a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, photographer and performer. With this exhibition he has his largest presentation to date with over 70 works. He lives and works in Brussels.
