    Fred Herzog. A Color Legacy
Fred Herzog's colorful Kodachrome photographs are legendary: street scenes from the 1950s and 1960s bathed in warm red-orange tones, precise observations of people and their movements in the city. Often poetic, sometimes witty, always from a respectful distance, these wonderful images always convey a familiar atmosphere. Herzog, who lived in Vancouver from 1953, not only created a colorful monument to the Canadian city but also produced sensitive images with a strong compositional and emotional impact. Furthermore, he traveled to the USA, Barbados, Curaçao, Guatemala, and Mexico, always with his Leica in tow. At a time when professional photography primarily relied on black and white, Herzog's color photographs are something special. Now, finally, the Equinox Gallery, which manages Fred Herzog's estate, is releasing previously unseen photographs from the archive.

Fred Herzog (1930–2019), who grew up in Stuttgart, emigrated to Vancouver, Canada, in 1953, where he initially worked as a medical photographer. He later taught at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. Major solo exhibitions have been shown in Berlin, New York, Paris, Toronto, and Vancouver. Hatje Cantz published Modern Color (2017) and Black and White (2022).

The Museum Langmatt in Baden is a gem in every respect. The house and garden take visitors back to the turn of the previous century, when Jenny and Sidney W. Brown set up house here. As collectors, the couple was well-informed and well-connected, and they assembled noteworthy, mainly Impressionist works of art, mainly on their trips to Paris. The Browns acquired paintings by Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, Cézanne, and Degas—numerous small works that were displayed in the rooms. The Museum Langmatt, which opened in 1990, is founded upon this unique core collection. The Browns living area became an influential exhibition space for contemporary art. This carefully designed, illustrated volume has been compiled to celebrate the museum’s thirtieth anniversary. It provides a look at the magical art collection, its special history, and a glimpse behind the scenes, as well. Accompanied by essays by the museum’s director, Markus Stegmann, as well as by eye witnesses, experts, and artists, the publication affords an atmospheric view of this unusual institution.

The MUSEUM LANGMATT collection was significantly founded by Sidney and Jenny Brown between 1900 and 1933. The heart of the collection consists of around 50 outstanding French impressionist. This unique ensemble also includes valuable French furniture from the 18th and 19th century, sculptures, drawings, textiles, silver, and porcelain, and also Chinese ceramics.

Caspar David Friedrich. Karlsruher Skizzenbuch (Schmuckausgabe)
The acquisition of the Karlsruhe Sketchbook by a German museum consortium and the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation in 2023 was an art-historical sensation. It is the last known sketchbook by Friedrich in private hands – and one of only six surviving sketchbooks worldwide by the most significant painter of German Romanticism.

This extraordinary artist's document from around 1804 offers an immediate insight into the crucial phase of Friedrich's artistic development. During his walks through Dresden and the surrounding landscape, he captured impressions of nature, motifs, and atmospheric studies – sketches that later formed the basis of iconic paintings.

The 33 surviving drawings provide unique access to Friedrich's way of seeing, thinking, and artistic process. The high-quality deluxe edition makes this rare sketchbook accessible in a particularly true-to-original form:

    - Complete, true-to-original facsimile reproduction of all 33 drawings
    - Historical original format with characteristic rounded corners
    - Companion booklet with a well-founded art-historical introduction
    - Presentation of the sketchbook and companion booklet in a high-quality box

Design, material, and craftsmanship are consistently geared towards the greatest possible proximity to the historical original. The edition not only conveys motifs but also makes Friedrich's artistic thought and working process tangible.

This preferential edition is aimed at art lovers, collectors, libraries, and institutions who wish to own a central document of Romanticism in bibliophile quality.

Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) was born in Greifswald, studied at the Art Academy in Copenhagen, and settled in Dresden from 1798. His landscape compositions testify to great introspection and melancholy. Friedrich demanded a new visual awareness from viewers; at the same time, his works elude clear interpretation, always offering new avenues for understanding.

Franz Marc: Die Suche nach einer besseren Welt
Franz Marc's work fascinates with its vibrant colors and deep connection to nature, particularly evident in his depictions of animals. Although the artist lived a rather secluded life, he was not a loner, but built an extensive network spanning Paris, Berlin, and Munich. Together with Wassily Kandinsky, he co-founded the editorial collective "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider) and became a passionate pioneer of modern art. His work, created between 1904 and 1914, evolved towards cubist dissolution of form; with the outbreak of the First World War, his creative endeavors came to an abrupt end.

The catalog traces the journey of a seeker who, in an era marked by a belief in progress, yearned for a spiritual space beyond technology. Published for Franz Marc's first monographic exhibition in over twenty years, this publication offers a comprehensive insight into the work of this extraordinary artist.

FRANZ MARC (1880–1916) is considered one of the most important painters of German Expressionism. His study of literature and linguistics and his bilingual upbringing by his French mother shaped him, as did his intensive engagement with the art of his time. Without Restraint

Women artists in Mexico present their lifeworld from a decidedly female point of view and respond to international artistic movements with very different approaches: works by Teresa Serrano (*1936), Ximena Cuevas (*1963), Betsabeé Romero (*1963), Teresa Margolles (*1963), Claudia Fernández (*1965), Melanie Smith (*1965), and Maruch Sántiz Gómez (*1975) constitute the core of this publication. The photographs, videos, objects, and installations from the holdings of the Daros Latinamerica Collection in Zurich take a subversive look at Mexico’s national identity. The works call prevailing hierarchies of power into question, including their associated traditional functions as well as the social spaces of women within Mexican society. The apparent banality of everyday things and actions—both in the domestic-private as well as the urban-public sphere—experiences new, deeper meaning and is in part ironically broken.

Die Maler des Heiligen Herzens / The Painters of the Sacred Heart

    Paintings of a Sensual Immediacy

As artists, they were self-taught and created a cosmos of images that still captivates us today with its sensual immediacy and has made a lasting mark in art history on the work of non-academically trained artists: Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), Camille Bombois (1883–1970), André Bauchant (1873–1958), Louis Vivin (1861–1939) and Séraphine Louis (1864–1942). They are counted among the so-called circle of the "painters of the sacred heart"; their scenarios, often borrowed from nature, especially flowers and fruits, but also people in parks and landscapes, indicate a closeness to nature, a sensitive approach to the things of the immediate environment, with which they apparently sought to escape the coldness of uprising modernism.

These French pioneers of authentic art were discovered by the German art historian Wilhelm Uhde (1874–1947), who organized their first joint exhibition in Paris in 1928.

    Frederic Matys Thursz

Frederic Matys Thursz (1930–1992) continually questioned painting. Following this critical attitude he developed over a period of forty years an impressive oeuvre that experimented with the most diverse techniques, processes, and approaches of painting. His late work in particular responded to the question of what painting can be through the persistent reduction of color and light, pure qualities that draw the viewer’s fascinated eye. This publication gathers together more than 120 works of art from both America and Europe, the majority of which are being published for the first time. His endeavors in painting are contrasted to a collection of Thursz’s own texts, such as lectures, interviews, and journal entries. Here, special weight is placed on the transcriptions of the series of lectures he gave in 1983 as an instructor at the New York Studio School.

Charlotte Perriand. The Art of Dwelling

The exhibition catalog Charlotte Perriand. The Art of Living is dedicated to one of the pioneering designers of modernism and illuminates the lasting relevance of her thinking for the present day.

Charlotte Perriand understood design as a cultural and social practice. Through an intensive engagement with architecture, craftsmanship, and industrial production, she developed an understanding of space that combines functionality, aesthetic clarity, and social responsibility. For her, living was not a style, but an attitude.

The richly illustrated volume is published on the occasion of the international retrospective at the Kunstmuseen Krefeld, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, and the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona.

    At a glance:

    - First monograph in 20 years
    - Extensive photo series with furniture, interiors, and architectural projects
    - New perspectives on sustainability and social dimensions of modernism

From the iconic tubular steel furniture of the 1920s to experimental living concepts and the alpine project Les Arcs, the publication traces the development of an oeuvre that set standards. Historical photographs, archival materials, and reconstructed rooms bring Perriand's design program to life in all its complexity.

Her transcultural experiences in Japan, Indochina, and Brazil expanded European modernism with material- and space-related approaches that continue to have an impact today. The volume positions Perriand as a central protagonist of a design that combines ecological sensitivity, social responsibility, and formal precision. More than an exhibition catalog, this publication is a well-founded approach to a body of work that has profoundly shaped the idea of living.

CHARLOTTE PERRIAND (1903–1999) was a pioneering French architect and designer who made significant contributions to modern furniture design and interior architecture. Against the backdrop of her social commitment and humanist philosophy, which connected people, nature, and art, she promoted social progress through functional and aesthetic design. Perriand always worked in the tension between tradition and innovation, industry, and nature. Her understanding of functional and forward-looking living spaces continues to influence new generations of creatives to this day.

Until the early 19th century, history painting, imbued with pathos, was considered the highest genre of art. With a moral claim—in Schiller's sense, to have an educational effect on the mind—the drawings condense significant moments from religious and mythological narratives. Human emotion and action literally become an artistic image of history. With the sheets assembled here, the Albertina unites outstanding works that mark the beginning of what is now the world's most important graphic arts collection. Its founder, Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, collected at the pulse of his time: Following his particular interest in drawings, studies, sketches, and large-format works on paper, he acquired the works directly and often personally in the studios of artists such as Jacques-Louis David, Anton Raphael Mengs, Antonio Canova, Angelika Kauffmann, Heinrich Friedrich Füger, and Johann Heinrich Füssli, or at the major academy exhibitions of his time.

Frédéric Clot, a self-taught artist, has developed a unique drawing and painting style – against the current of established styles, primarily in black and white, oscillating between figuration and abstraction. In his paintings, etchings, and drawings, he evokes enigmatic places. Clot creates scenarios that seem to perfectly reflect our times: they are abstract, elusive reminiscences of our present, mirroring the broad communication of the digital age.
This richly illustrated publication is the first monograph to encompass the complete works to date of the Swiss artist. It offers an overview of more than twenty years of his artistic creation and is complemented by essays from art historian Karine Tissot, cultural journalist and art critic Françoise Jaunin, and London art critic JJ Charlesworth.

FRÉDÉRIC CLOT (*1973, Saint-Loup, Switzerland) divides his time between Ependes, a small village in the canton of Vaud, and Lisbon. His works are represented in numerous collections worldwide and are regularly exhibited in Switzerland and abroad.

    Fred Herzog

After immigrating to Canada in the fifties, Fred Herzog (*1930 in Bad Friedrichshall, Germany) devoted himself to what at the time was an unusual medium: color photography. In doing so, he breached entrenched visual habits and doctrines, which primarily assigned the status of art to black-and-white photography.

As a pioneer in the field of color photography, Herzog perfected his eye for the supposedly insignificant. His motifs are the streets of Vancouver, supermarkets, gas stations, bars, urban scenes, landscapes, and, again and again, the people in his environment—the heights and depths of the North American dream. He tested the potential of color photography as a medium for great objectivity and great artistry alike, and his critical gaze shows us the trivial, the ephemeral, and the apparently meaningless. Above all, however, color lends his photographs a unique atmosphere and force, and is ultimately what lends them such authenticity.

The most well-known project of this kind is the Design Center Linz, where Lang and Wittenborn were considerably involved in the interior design. John Heartfield: Zeitausschnitte

Between 1930 and 1938, Berlin-born John Heartfield, whose given name was Helmut Herzfeld, created political photomontages; today, they can be regarded as symbols of the fall of the Weimar Republic and Hitler’s dictatorship. A bitter opponent of the National Socialists, the virtuoso photo editor of the front pages of the Arbeiter Illustrierten Zeitung lighted on images that were often astonishingly clear-sighted and powerful.

This publication offers a current, undisguised view of this group of works by Heartfield (1891–1968), whose oeuvre not only makes him an outstanding artist but an extraordinary contemporary witness. The book draws upon the artist’s own works, some of which were not generally available until 1989, and also sheds some light on what was—at least from today’s vantage point—his somewhat too unreserved support of the Communist Party. The early Dadaist years, his friendship with George Grosz, and the legendary book covers Heartfield designed in the twenties for the Malik Verlag, which he founded with his brother Wieland, round off the volume.

Tod, Glück und Ruhm in Sanssouci

Frederick the Great as a gardener? That is something new. In fact, however, under Frederick’s idiosyncratic guidance, the garden at Sanssouci became a mirror of his personal and political roles. Paths, plantings, architecture, and sculptures express his notions of death, happiness, and fame. Frederick used famous forms of mythological representation, as well as mysterious allegorical allusions and emblematic references. The “axis of knowledge” defined his Prussian Arcadia as the best of all possible worlds, where the “philosopher of Sanssouci” and his friends devoted themselves to the arts and sciences. The “axis of power,” on the other hand, represents his fame and ambition as a European monarch who legitimized his rule not only via the Hohenzoller and Orange dynasties, but also through the tradition of the pharaohs, the Roman emperors, and Louis XIV, the Sun King.

The brown, green and orange boxes, usually part of a system of exchange and monetary deposit, are removed from normal commercial circulation and, along with an unexpected aesthetic quality, take on a new function - beyond the aesthetics of commercial goods and the logistics of stockrooms. The box houses, located at key places in the urban landscape, function as cinemas, bus stops or - like at the Sculpture Project in Münster in 1997, which marked the first international success for the two artists - as an information pavilion and kiosk. Georg Baselitz was born Hans-Georg Kern in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, and is one of the most important contemporary artists in Germany. He discovered the print medium early on, producing his first etchings in 1964. From then on he experimented with very different techniques, such as dry-point, aquatint, and then later with wood- and linocuts. In the process he explored the specific requirements of these artistic forms of expression, developing his own unique works on paper.
With the inclusion of prints that have never before been exhibited, this volume presents a choice selection of works from a very important branch of Baselitz’s oeuvre. The original prints, print series, and rare artist’s proofs dating from 1964 to 1983 stem from the excellent collection belonging to Franz, Duke of Bavaria, head of the House of Wittelsbach. This book contains Baselitz’s first etchings, the figural Heroes from the mid-sixties, and excerpts from the portfolio series Cows (1969), Eagles, and Trees (both 1974). It also includes examples of his famous inverted pictures, which he has been making since 1969.
